The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied widespread rumours circulating on social media that its Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has been sacked by President Bola Tinubu.

A viral message, primarily shared via WhatsApp, falsely claimed that Prof. Yakubu had been replaced by a certain Prof. Bashiru Olamilekan.

“INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmud Yakubu has been replaced with Prof. Bashiru Olamilekan by President Tinubu,” the unauthenticated message read.

However, when contacted by Vanguard, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, dismissed the claim, stating:

“Please, disregard. It is not true.”

Professor Yakubu is currently serving the final stretch of his second term and is expected to conclude his tenure toward the end of the year.

The procedure for appointing a new INEC Chairman is governed by a constitutional process. It begins with a presidential nomination, followed by a background check by the Department of State Services (DSS), review by the National Council of State, and final confirmation by the Senate.

No such steps have been initiated, according to credible sources within the electoral body.

This clarification comes amid increased political tension and misinformation circulating across social platforms ahead of the 2027 general elections.
