The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed the death of one individual and injuries to two others following a horrific accident on the Cele Expressway, inward Oshodi, Lagos, on Saturday.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, shared the details of the incident in a statement, revealing that the accident involved a 40-foot containerized articulated truck, five commercial buses, and two private vehicles, including a Camry and a Sienna bus.
The accident tragically resulted in the death of a pedestrian, while the two injured individuals sustained serious injuries.
One of the commercial bus drivers is reported to have suffered compound fractures to both his arm and leg.
According to Bakare-Oki, preliminary investigations suggest that the truck, carrying two large containers, suffered a brake failure while traveling at high speed, causing it to lose control.
The dislodged containers then crashed onto the commercial buses and private vehicles, causing extensive damage and injury.
LASTMA officials, in collaboration with the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and local bystanders, launched a swift rescue operation, extracting the injured and restoring traffic flow on the heavily impacted expressway.
The Ijesha-Tedo Police Division also provided security during the emergency response to ensure public order.
Bakare-Oki extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
