The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has strongly refuted recent allegations that inmates in the nation’s correctional facilities are being starved due to economic challenges. Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja, NCoS spokesperson Abubakar Umar credited President Bola Tinubu’s administration with significantly increasing the budget for inmate feeding, ensuring continued provision of three square meals daily.
Umar explained that custodial centres across Nigeria are operating under strict procedures that prioritize the well-being of inmates. “Contrary to circulating reports, no inmate is dying of hunger. Every person in our care receives three meals a day — breakfast, lunch, and dinner — as stipulated by our guidelines,” he said.
He further revealed that the Tinubu-led government raised the feeding allocation by 50 percent, showing clear commitment to prisoner welfare despite national economic strains.
According to him, claims by some media outlets that reporters interviewed starving inmates are false and logistically impossible due to tight security protocols that prohibit recording devices in such facilities.
Umar emphasized the need for responsible journalism, warning against the dissemination of falsehoods that could erode public trust in government institutions.
