Rivers Administrator Ibas Urges Senate To Back Security, Infrastructure Push

Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, the Administrator of Rivers State, has appealed to the Nigerian Senate for legislative support to drive his administration’s development goals, emphasizing the need for enhanced security and infrastructure to boost economic growth and improve living standards in the state.  

Ibas made the call on Friday during a courtesy visit by the Senate Committee on Works to Government House, Port Harcourt. The delegation, led by Senator Barinada Mpigi of Rivers South-East, included representatives from Julius Berger Nigeria PLC, headed by Managing Director Dr. Peer Lubasch.  

Highlighting his administration’s priorities since taking office on March 20, 2025, Ibas underscored efforts to address insecurity and tackle critical infrastructural deficits. “We are in the process of putting together a new budget that reflects our commitment to healthcare, education, social services, and the continued infrastructural development of our state,” he said. “This process has been transparent, inclusive, and expedited.” 

The forthcoming budget, nearing completion, aims to create jobs and invest in key sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, and technology. Ibas stressed the importance of Senate backing to secure resources and legislative approval to implement these initiatives. “Your partnership is critical to our success in ensuring Rivers State remains on the path of progress and enduring peace for future generations,” he told the delegation.  

Ibas also urged the Federal Government to prioritize funding and accelerate federal projects in Rivers State, a vital economic hub known as the “treasure base of the nation.” He noted the state’s strategic assets, including roads, bridges, seaports, airports, oil and gas facilities, a petrochemical company, and refineries, but lamented the challenges of maintaining and expanding this infrastructure due to resource constraints.  

“As you undertake your oversight duties to assess critical infrastructure, I urge you to recognize the pivotal role Rivers State plays in the country,” Ibas said, calling for the lawmakers’ advocacy to ensure adequate federal attention and resources for sustainable development.  

Reflecting on his tenure, Ibas highlighted efforts to restore peace and stability through engagement with civil society organizations, traditional rulers, and government officials. “We have worked to rebuild trust and foster a conducive environment for investment and development,” he said.  

In response, Senator Mpigi reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to supporting Rivers State’s progress. He revealed that the committee was in the state to inspect ongoing federal projects, including the Bodo-Bonny Link Road and the Coastal Road project, which is 40% complete. Mpigi commended Ibas’ focus on security and infrastructure, urging him to maintain efforts to protect lives and property.  

The visit underscores growing collaboration between the Rivers State administration and the National Assembly as both seek to address the state’s pressing developmental needs.
