The Ondo State Police Command has launched an investigation into allegations of extortion made against the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Igbara-Oke in Ifedore Local Government Area, Ganiyu Dauda.
The probe follows a protest by residents of Igbara-Oke on Friday, who took to the streets carrying placards and blocking the main road leading into the town to express their anger over alleged misconduct by the DPO and other officers in the division.
Confirming the development on Saturday in Akure, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Olushola Ayanlade, said the police have begun looking into the claims.
He called on members of the public with relevant information or evidence to come forward.
“The command has launched an investigation into the details of the incident and the alleged extortion,” Ayanlade said. “So far, no formal complaint has been submitted regarding the DPO. But we encourage anyone with concrete evidence to come forward.”
He assured the public that the outcome of the investigation will be made known and urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding.
Ayanlade also explained that the protest may have stemmed from a misunderstanding between members of the driver’s union and some police officers over the towing of a crashed vehicle into the Igbara-Oke Police Station premises.
