History was made on Saturday as Oba Abimbola Owoade was officially crowned the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, succeeding the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who passed away on April 22, 2022, at the age of 83.
The coronation ceremony took place at Olivet Baptist High School, Oyo, drawing a distinguished crowd of traditional rulers, political leaders, and eminent personalities from across the country.
Leading the high-profile event was Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Tamunominini Makinde, and Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal. Also in attendance were dignitaries including the Statistician General of the Federation, Prince Adeyemi Adeniran; Deputy Governor of Osun State, Prince Kola Adewusi; Chief of Staff to the Ondo State Governor, Prince Olusegun Omojuwa; Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin; and Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, among others.
President Bola Tinubu was represented by the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu.
Oba Owoade had earlier received the staff of office and instrument of authority on January 13, 2025, in a brief but symbolic ceremony held at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.
His coronation comes nearly three years after the passing of the revered Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, whose reign spanned over five decades and left an indelible mark on Yoruba tradition and culture.
The new Alaafin is expected to play a pivotal role in preserving the rich heritage of the Oyo Empire while navigating the responsibilities of traditional leadership in contemporary times.
