The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has debunked reports making the rounds on social media that it has introduced new ₦5,000 and ₦10,000 banknotes.
The apex bank described the reports as false and misleading.
On April 2, 2025, reports emerged on several social media platforms that the apex bank had unveiled high-denomination notes to enhance cash transactions and reduce cash handling.
The statement was attributed to a supposed CBN Deputy Governor, Dr. Ibrahim Tahir Jr., noting that the rollout of the new notes is set for May 1, 2025.
Reacting to the rumours, the CBN has categorically debunked the claim, warning the public against spreading false information.
“This content is NOT from the Central Bank of Nigeria. Kindly note that the official website of the CBN is cbn.gov.ng,” the bank stated on its official X platform on April 2, 2025.
The CBN urged Nigerians to rely only on official communication channels for accurate financial updates, stressing that any major policy decisions regarding the nation’s currency would be formally announced through appropriate government platforms
