Nigeria is at a critical juncture. Our democracy, once a beacon of hope for the African continent, is now under siege. The very institutions meant to uphold justice, fairness, and the rule of law have been compromised, leaving the people vulnerable to oppression, intimidation, and a blatant disregard for constitutional governance.
As a prominent chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State from Alimosho Local Government, I can no longer remain silent while the country is being led into a state of crisis. The judiciary, which should serve as the last hope of the common man, has lost its independence. The principles of justice have been replaced by executive manipulation, where court rulings favor only those in power. The National Assembly, which should be the voice of the people, no longer represents their interests. Instead, it has become a mere extension of the executive arm, rubber-stamping decisions that do not reflect the will of the electorate.
Even more alarming is the growing indication that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is considering declaring a state of emergency in opposition-controlled states, particularly in the South-South region. This move, if executed, would not only be unconstitutional but a dangerous attempt to silence opposition and erode the democratic process.
Furthermore, security agencies, which should protect the lives and rights of Nigerians, have been completely compromised and politicized. Freedom of speech is under attack, and those who dare to speak the truth risk illegal detention and persecution. The people of Nigeria are living in fear, afraid to express their frustrations, afraid to demand justice, and afraid of a government that no longer listens to them.
I am lamenting the fact that under this administration, nothing is working. The economy is crumbling, the suffering of the people has worsened, and the gap between the rich and poor has never been wider. The hardship Nigerians face today is unprecedented, yet those in power continue to tighten their grip with oppressive policies rather than providing solutions.
I call on all Nigerians—political leaders, civil society organizations, the judiciary, and the international community—to stand up and defend our democracy before it is too late. We cannot afford to sit idly by while our country is plunged into dictatorship. The time for action is now. Nigeria belongs to all of us, and we must reclaim it before it is too late.
