Troops of Operation Delta Safe, in collaboration with other joint military forces in the Niger Delta, have recovered stolen petroleum products worth over N7 billion in the first quarter of the year.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) in Abuja, Maj-Gen Markus Kangye, the Director of Defence Media Operations, confirmed the military’s sustained operations against oil theft and illegal bunkering in the region.
During the operations, the military destroyed 122 illegal refining sites and arrested 11 suspects involved in oil theft and bunkering.
- 6,290,437 litres of stolen crude oil
- 1,319,437 litres of diesel
- 6,130 litres of kerosene
- 4,545 litres of petrol
In addition to the recovered petroleum products, security forces dismantled:
- 257 crude oil cooking ovens
- 128 dugout pits
- 192 boats
- 138 storage tanks
- 236 drums
- Various speed boats, pumping machines, and 90 vehicles used for illegal activities.
The military has reiterated its commitment to eradicating oil theft and illegal refining operations, which have significantly impacted Nigeria’s economy and environment.
Authorities have assured that the crackdown will continue, warning criminal elements to desist from sabotaging the nation’s resources.
