The internal crisis rocking the Labour Party took a new dimension on Monday as National Chairman Julius Abure and the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, called for separate National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings following the recent Supreme Court judgment.
Abure convened his NEC meeting at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja, while Obi, alongside Abia State Governor Alex Otti, summoned a parallel stakeholders’ engagement at a different venue, setting the stage for a fresh showdown over the control and future direction of the party.
A statement by the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, confirmed the NEC session chaired by Abure, scheduled for April 7 at the LP secretariat in Utako.
Shortly after, Obi and Otti issued a separate invitation for a NEC meeting and interactive town hall engagement to be held on Wednesday, April 9, at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.
According to a statement from Obi’s spokesman, Ibrahim Umar, key stakeholders invited to the meeting include the party’s 2023 vice presidential candidate, sitting and former senators, House of Representatives members, and LP candidates from the last election cycle.
The move is widely seen as a strategic battle for loyalty and influence within the party, especially in light of the legal uncertainties surrounding its leadership structure.
