The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has summoned the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, to appear before the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja over a violent incident during the recent Eid-el-Fitr celebration in Kano.

The tragic incident, which occurred during the Emir’s return from Eid prayers at the Kofar Mata prayer ground, reportedly led to the death of a vigilante member, Surajo Rabiu, while another, Aminu Suleman, sustained injuries and was hospitalized at Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital.

A formal invitation, signed by Commissioner of Police (Operations), CP Olajide Ibitoye on behalf of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, was sent to Emir Sanusi, requesting his presence at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

The letter reads in part:“I have the directives of the Inspector General of Police, through the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Force Intelligence Department (FID), to invite you for an investigative meeting regarding the incident that occurred during the Sallah celebration within your domain. Your availability is highly sought for a purposeful investigation.”

Police in Kano had earlier confirmed the arrest of one Usman Sagiru in connection with the attack on Emir Sanusi’s convoy, which sparked the violence that claimed a life.

Police spokesperson SP Abdullahi Haruna stated that the attack occurred while local security personnel were providing cover for the Emir’s entourage.

The incident has raised tensions in Kano and renewed concerns over security arrangements surrounding high-profile figures during major religious celebrations.
