Another wave of violence has hit Benue State as suspected herdsmen launched a deadly attack late Friday night, killing a security guard at the Otobi Dam in Otukpo Local Government Area.
The assault marks yet another grim chapter in the growing list of attacks plaguing communities across the Otukpo axis in recent weeks.
Confirming the incident, Hon. Angbo Kennedy, the lawmaker representing Otukpo/Akpa State Constituency in the Benue State House of Assembly, raised an alarm over the escalating insecurity in the region.
“This is becoming too much,” he lamented. “A guard was killed this evening at the Otobi Dam by herdsmen. Please, let’s watch out for each other—we may be forced to resort to self-help.”
As of press time, the identity of the slain guard had not been officially released. Authorities have yet to announce any arrests in connection with the attack.
This latest tragedy comes barely 24 hours after gunmen hijacked a Benue Links bus, killing two and abducting 13 passengers, further amplifying residents’ fears of a security collapse.
Communities in Okpomaju, Okete, and Asa—also within Otukpo LGA—have been previously hit by similar violence, resulting in multiple deaths and displacement.
Locals are now calling on the Benue State Government and federal security agencies to increase surveillance and deploy security forces to high-risk rural areas, particularly around critical infrastructure such as the Otobi Dam.
The recurring bloodshed has left many residents in fear, with calls growing louder for immediate and decisive action before more lives are lost.
