Rivers Assembly Suspends Sittings Indefinitely Amid Budget Dispute

The Rivers State House of Assembly has suspended its legislative activities indefinitely.

The decision was reached during a plenary session presided over by Speaker Martin Amaewhule in Port Harcourt on Friday.

The development comes just hours after the State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, wrote to the Speaker, notifying him of his intention to visit the Assembly to present the 2025 Appropriation Bill for consideration and approval.

In a letter dated March 13 and addressed to Amaewhule, Fubara indicated his readiness to present the budget on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, or on any other date within March deemed suitable by the House.

Fubara emphasized that his decision aligns with the Supreme Court judgment and follows the lawmakers’ request for him to re-present the budget.

He also recalled a previous attempt to present the budget at the Assembly Quarters, where the lawmakers were temporarily sitting, but was denied access to the complex.

More details to follow…
