Police Grants Suspect Bail, Assures Thorough Investigation Into Death Of Bumpa Co-Founder Adetunji Opayele

The Lagos State Police Command has affirmed that it conducted a comprehensive investigation into the tragic death of Adetunji Opayele, popularly known as Teejay, who co-founded the tech startup Bumpa.

Opayele, 31, was involved in a fatal accident on March 4, 2025, while riding his power bike home from the gym along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Reports indicate that the driver, Biola Adams-Odutayo, failed to yield the right of way while merging onto the expressway, striking Opayele and leaving him unconscious on the road. Despite being a healthcare professional, Adams-Odutayo allegedly refused to assist the injured victim, reportedly citing concerns about bloodstains in her vehicle.

Eyewitnesses stated that Opayele was rushed to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel allegedly declined to provide treatment. He was subsequently taken to another medical facility, where he was pronounced dead after midnight.

Addressing public concerns, Lagos State Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin stated via X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday that the police had thoroughly investigated the incident and taken appropriate legal steps against the suspect.

“We @LagosPoliceNG acknowledge public concerns regarding the tragic accident that claimed the life of Adetunji Opayele (Teejay) on March 4, 2025. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and all who have been affected by this loss,” Hundeyin wrote.

“Following a thorough investigation, Abiola Odutayo ‘f’ was arraigned in Court 1, Tinubu on March 12, 2025, after she was discharged from the hospital, for driving on a public highway in a reckless and careless manner without due care and attention to other road users, thereby causing the death of one Tunji Opayele ‘m’ aged 32 and committing an offence…”

The court granted the defendant bail and adjourned the case until April 16, 2025.

The tragic incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for stricter enforcement of road safety laws and accountability for medical negligence.

The Lagos State Police Command has reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparency, fairness, and justice in the case.
