Ogun State House of Assembly Reinvites Quarry Companies Amid Worker Concerns

The Ogun State House of Assembly, through its Committee on Industry, Trade and Investment, has taken significant steps to address pressing issues raised by the Nigerian Union of Mine Workers concerning six quarry companies operating within the state. Management teams from Andy CNC Quarry, Max Sanxin Quarry in Ijebu-Ode, Sino Trust/Multiverse Quarry, and Huaya Quarry in IMOSAN have been re-invited to a crucial meeting scheduled for Thursday, April 3, 2025, at 2:00 PM.

This invitation follows a recent interface with representatives from two of the six quarries, where the committee sought to discuss the concerns articulated in a petition submitted by the union. During this meeting, Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Adebisi Oyedele, underscored the importance of compliance, warning those who failed to attend that the Assembly would not hesitate to invoke Section 129 of the Nigerian Constitution, which allows for the issuance of warrants for attendance.

Hon. Oyedele emphasized that while mining activities fall under the exclusive list of federal jurisdiction, the welfare and rights of workers, peaceful coexistence, and consumer protection remain critical issues that require immediate attention. "We must address these concerns to ensure the safety and well-being of our communities," he stated.

The Assembly's commitment to upholding peace and tranquility throughout Ogun State was reiterated, with Hon. Oyedele commending the representatives from the two companies that attended the initial meeting. He reaffirmed the Assembly's role in carrying out its quasi-judicial functions to foster dialogue and resolve conflicts within the sector.

As the date of the re-invitation approaches, stakeholders are hopeful for a constructive dialogue that will lead to improved conditions for workers in the quarry industry and ensure that the operations of these companies align with the interests of the community and the state at large.
