Veteran Nollywood actress, Nkechi Nweje, has passed away after a brief illness, leaving the Nigerian film industry in mourning.
Her death was confirmed on Saturday by movie producer Stanley Ajemba, popularly known as Stanley Ontop, who took to Instagram to express his grief.
“Nollywood is in tears as we lost one of our vibrant actresses, @nkechi.nweje,” Ajemba wrote. “It still feels like a dream. Rest in peace, ma’am. My best friend, always calling to advise me. The last time we spoke, she told me, ‘Ontop, stop.’ I’m still speechless.”
Veteran actress Rita Edochie also honored Nweje, sharing a symbolic candlelight post on Instagram, writing, “This world is really not our home.”
Actor Asa Ikuku mourned her passing, saying, “Rest in peace, mummy Nkechi Nweje TV (Nwanyi Onitsha). You were a blessing to us, but God knows best. We will miss you so much. Rest on, legend.”
Nkechi Nweje was known for her impactful performances in Nollywood, especially in motherly roles, earning her a respected place in the industry. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Azuibuike Nweje, and six children.
Her passing is a significant loss to Nollywood, as colleagues and fans continue to pay tribute to her enduring legacy.
