Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), for Friday, March 21, 2025.
The case file was recently transferred to Justice Omotosho following a reassignment. Kanu is facing a seven-count terrorism charge brought against him by the Federal Government.
Justice Omotosho took over the case after Justice Binta Nyako, the previous presiding judge, recused herself.
Justice Nyako’s withdrawal on September 24, 2024, came after Kanu and his legal team accused her of bias and requested the case be reassigned.
Initially, the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court returned the case to Justice Nyako, stating that Kanu’s legal team must formally apply for her recusal.
However, Kanu opposed appearing before her, leading to an indefinite adjournment of the case.
On February 20, 2025, Kanu’s lawyers petitioned Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, asking for the case to be reassigned within the Federal High Court in Abuja or transferred to the Southeast.
According to Kanu’s lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, they later received letters from both the CJN and the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, confirming the case reassignment.
With Justice Omotosho now presiding, proceedings are set to resume on March 21, 2025.
