Airstrikes conducted by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) have resulted in the elimination of two notorious bandit kingpins, Gero (Alhaji) and Alhaji Riga, along with at least 20 of their fighters in Zamfara State.
The operation targeted their hideouts in the Unguwar Goga hill forest, located in Faskari Local Government Area.
A statement issued by the Deputy Director of Public Relations and Information, Group Captain Kabiru Ali, confirmed that the “precision airstrikes were executed in the early hours of March 13, following careful and actionable intelligence.”
“The strike, advancing purposeful lethality, destroyed the fortified camps of notorious bandit kingpins, Gero (Alhaji) and Alhaji Riga, neutralizing over 20 criminals, with additional casualties reported in the surrounding rocky hills,” the statement read.
The statement further emphasized that the airstrike had a decisive impact on the criminals and that an assessment of the full extent of the damage was still ongoing.
According to the NAF, Riga and Gero were key enablers of banditry in the region, harboring terrorist elements responsible for relentless ambushes along the Funtua-Gusau Road, particularly between Yankara and Sheme villages.
“Their elimination marks a major breakthrough in the ongoing military campaign to restore peace in the North-West,” the statement concluded.
