A violent clash between members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) and soldiers erupted on Thursday afternoon at Banex Plaza, Abuja, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
The incident occurred just hours after the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria issued a security alert, warning its citizens about planned IMN protests in Abuja and other major cities on Friday.
The embassy cautioned that the demonstrations could cause roadblocks, traffic congestion, and possible confrontations.
Potential protest hotspots listed in the security warning included Banex Plaza, Berger Junction, Unity Fountain, Eagle Square, Area 10 Shopping Plaza, and several mosques.
As of the time of filing this report, details of the incident remain unclear, and efforts to reach the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, for comments were unsuccessful.
