A bill aimed at stripping the Vice President, Governors, and Deputy Governors of their constitutional immunity has passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.
The proposed constitutional amendment was debated and successfully advanced during plenary on Wednesday.
Sponsored by Solomon Bob, a lawmaker from Rivers State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the bill seeks to “promote accountability in public office” by revoking the legal protection that currently shields these officials from prosecution while in office.
If enacted, the legislation would allow the Vice President, Governors, and their Deputies to be held accountable for any legal infractions without waiting for the end of their tenure.
The bill will now proceed to the committee stage for further review and refinement before moving forward in the legislative process.
