Bauchi State Governor and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, has expressed his willingness to collaborate with Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to fortify opposition politics in Nigeria.
Speaking on Thursday after a closed-door meeting with Obi at the Government House, Bauchi, Mohammed praised Obi’s political style, vision, and deep understanding of governance and the economy.
“We have a lot of respect for him because of his political approach, statesmanship, and mastery of governance,” Mohammed stated.
He further revealed that their discussions centered on key national issues, including political developments in Rivers State and the role of the opposition in Nigeria.
“I appreciate what he is doing as a leader of the opposition because, whether we like it or not, he is now the face of opposition politics in Nigeria,” Mohammed added.
The governor emphasized the need for unity among opposition figures, saying, “I am ready to work with Peter Obi to provide a strong, visionary, and strategic opposition to rescue this country.”
Obi, in response, highlighted the importance of addressing Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges, particularly in the North.
“All of you know where we are today as a country. We must talk about the issues affecting the North because it is a critical component in getting Nigeria on the right path,” he said.
He stressed that poverty alleviation through education and agriculture was essential to tackling insecurity, adding, “Until we address poverty, we cannot solve criminality.”
Obi also criticized the country’s political priorities, lamenting, “Instead of focusing on hunger, poverty, education, and healthcare, our discourse is dominated by budget padding and scandals.”
The meeting, according to both leaders, marks the beginning of further engagements aimed at strengthening opposition politics and fostering national development.
