Police Crack Down on Illegal Weapons Manufacturing and Violent Crime Across Nigeria

In a significant operation aimed at enhancing national security, the Nigeria Police Force has successfully executed a series of raids targeting illegal weapons manufacturing and violent crime, resulting in multiple arrests and the recovery of a substantial cache of firearms.

On January 11, 2025, police operatives conducted a well-orchestrated raid on an illegal weapons manufacturing factory located in the Tse Akamabe area of Kwande Local Government Area, Benue State. The operation led to the apprehension of two suspects, identified as Friday Aduduakambe and Iorwashima Iornyume, both 35 years old. During the search of the facility, authorities recovered nine locally fabricated pistols, an unfinished locally made AK-47 rifle, two gas cylinders, four vise machines, a filing machine, and numerous tools used for weapons manufacturing. This discovery underscores the ongoing challenge of illegal arms production and trafficking within the country.

In a separate incident, the Delta State Command of the Nigeria Police, acting on credible intelligence, raided an apartment in the DSC area, arresting Prosper Ak 32-year-old member of the notorious Eiye confraternity. Akeni, known as a hired assassin for the cult group, was found in possession of an English revolver pistol, a Beretta pistol, two locally made double-barrel guns, two locally made single-barrel guns, a locally made revolver pistol, a locally made single-barrel pistol, and 25 rounds of ammunition. During interrogation, Akeni confessed that the firearms belonged to his cult group, revealing the extent of the dangerous intersection between organized crime and illegal arms.

The crackdown extends beyond weapons manufacturing. In Kebbi State, police have made significant strides in addressing violent crime. On December 31, 2024, officers responded swiftly to the scene of a stabbing incident in Bakin Turu Village, where 25-year-old Yunusa Haruna allegedly fatally stabbed his elder brother, Isiyaku Haruna, following a domestic dispute. The police acted promptly, apprehending Yunusa at the scene. Additionally, on January 8, 2025, another suspect, Abubakar Ummar, was arrested in Zuru Village for fatally stabbing Mohammed Bala during an argument.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, praised the operatives involved in these landmark operations, commending their dedication to combating crime and ensuring public safety. He encouraged police personnel to continue their efforts in restoring peace and order throughout the nation. Furthermore, the IGP urged members of the public to maintain vigilance and cooperate with law enforcement by providing valuable information that could enhance community-based policing initiatives.
