In a pressing appeal to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, the leadership of a faction within the Ogun State Transport Union has raised concerns about the disruptive activities of certain political appointees, which they claim are instigating a crisis within the union. The state chairman of Park Management Services Limited (PAM), Alh. Akeem Bodunrin Iyeru, along with fellow union members, voiced their worries in a statement delivered to journalists on Wednesday.
The union leaders allege that these political appointees are conspiring with a prominent figure, Alhaji Ismailia Mustapha Adewale, commonly referred to as ‘Yaro’, to create discord and destabilize the transport sector in Ogun State. They contend that the turmoil has been exacerbated since the conclusion of the last gubernatorial election, which resulted in a brief return to peace among the three transport unions in the state.
Iyeru articulated the union's discontent, highlighting their significant contribution to Governor Abiodun's re-election campaign, and expressed disappointment over Yaro's attempts to incite further chaos. "Though relative calm was achieved through the efforts of dedicated stakeholders, Yaro seems intent on rekindling conflicts," he stated.
Recent reports indicate that Yaro has allegedly recruited individuals suspected to be associated with radical groups, further complicating the situation. There are concerns that these actions are being facilitated by insiders within the state government, including speculation regarding the involvement of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, and the Commissioner for Transport, Engr. Gbenga Dairo. The union leaders are wary that such backing could lead to significant unrest if left unchecked.
The statement elaborated on complaints that Yaro has ousted respected union leaders who played pivotal roles in securing the Governor's victory, replacing them with individuals labeled as "hoodlums."
