Gov. Abba Yusuf empowers 2,386 women with 7,158 goats in Kano

Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano, has distributed 7,158 red goats to 2,386 women in the state.

 

In a statement on Tuesday, Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa, spokesperson to the governor, said the distribution marked the launch of the second phase of the women empowerment initiative under the Livestock Fattening Programme of the Kano Agro-Pastoral Development Project.

Dawakin-Tofa said the initiative, valued at N2.3 billion, aims to reduce poverty and promote economic self-sufficiency.

 

He added that the programme involved giving livestock to women in all 44 local government areas of Kano.

 

Each recipient, he said, received three goats to support their efforts in livestock entrepreneurship.

 

“The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing poverty through innovative and inclusive approaches,” he said.

 

The spokesperson added that the programme’s subsequent phases would include the distribution of 1,342 cows and 1,822 rams to women and youth.

 

“Yusuf said the initiative was part of his administration’s broader strategy to empower vulnerable groups and foster economic independence among women and youth in the state,” he added.

 

“He warned the beneficiaries against using the livestock for other purposes, stressing the need for accountability and responsibility in the programme.”

 

Dawakin-Tofa said the initiative “reflected the administration’s focus on sustainable development and empowering communities to stimulate grassroots economic growth”.

 

“By integrating women and youth into the agricultural value chain, the programme aims to enhance household income and reduce dependency on government aid,” he said.

 

“The initiative has been widely praised as a significant effort to improve livelihoods, strengthen food security, and create wealth in Kano’s rural communities.”
