The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) is gearing up to celebrate its 32nd Convocation Ceremony, scheduled for January 25, 2025. This prestigious event marks a significant milestone in the university's ongoing quest for academic excellence and robust community engagement.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olusola Babatunde Kehinde, FGSN, FIHS, FASN, has expressed heartfelt appreciation for the unwavering dedication of the university's staff, attributing the uninterrupted academic sessions over the past four years to their relentless commitment to education and student success. Under the banner of this year's ceremony, a total of 3,567 undergraduates will be conferred degrees, including 120 First Class honors, 1,626 Second Class Upper, 1,624 Second Class Lower, 164 Third Class, as well as 33 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) graduates. Additionally, 30 postgraduate students will receive their degrees, with 274 completing their Master's and 136 achieving PhDs.
In a vibrant atmosphere of anticipation, Prof. Kehinde highlighted several transformative initiatives currently underway at FUNAAB. The university is actively executing 19 projects funded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), aimed at enhancing academic infrastructure and providing students with a more conducive learning environment.
Aligning with the federal government's directive, FUNAAB has set its focus on three critical areas: Teaching, Research, and Community Engagement. This strategic emphasis underscores the institution's commitment to delivering quality education while addressing pressing societal challenges. Notably, the Vice Chancellor announced the expansion of FUNAAB from three colleges to ten, reflecting the university's ambition to broaden its academic offerings. This expansion includes the introduction of eight new programs and the establishment of a Department of Library and Information Science.
As of January 20, 2025, FUNAAB's academic portfolio boasts a total of 54 courses, with 38 programs accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC). The newly added programs encompass six fields: Computer Science, Cyber Security, Data Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, and Telecommunications Science, as well as a program in Industrial Chemistry. Furthermore, the university has received approval from its governing council for the establishment of the Department of Information and General Studies, further enriching the academic landscape.
In the realm of research, FUNAAB has made significant strides in ensuring that its academic staff are not only educators but also active researchers dedicated to agricultural and scientific inquiry. The university has recently garnered attention for its achievement in securing approval for six research proposals from the Nigerian government, positioning it as the fifth-best institution in Nigeria for research initiatives. The judicious use of the Institution Based Research funds in 2024 has further solidified FUNAAB’s reputation as a leading research institution.
FUNAAB's commitment to food security and sustainability has not gone unnoticed, earning the university numerous awards from both local and international bodies. These accolades serve as a testament to FUNAAB's tireless efforts in mitigating food insecurity and contributing positively to Nigeria's agricultural landscape.
