Nigerian Police Force Revamps Training Programs to Enhance Skills and Professionalism

Abuja, December 5, 2024 – In a bold move aimed at modernizing the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has announced a series of reorientation programs focused on administrative duties, weapon handling, and combat training for police personnel. This initiative, unveiled during the recent Passing Out Parade of the Safe School Protection Unit (SPU), underscores the IGP's commitment to aligning the Force with global policing standards.

The directive mandates continuous training in essential areas, including policing ethics and professional conduct, as part of a broader strategy to enhance the skills and capabilities of police officers. “Ongoing training is vital for the revitalization of our Force,” stated IGP Egbetokun, emphasizing the need for officers to be well-prepared for their roles in an ever-evolving society.

The comprehensive retraining program, held at the Peace Keeping Hall in Abuja, covered critical topics such as the principles of administration, basic weapon handling, musketry, and essential combat skills. These sessions are designed not only to improve practical skills but also to foster a deeper understanding of the responsibilities that come with police work.

In a further effort to instill a culture of professionalism and ethical conduct, the IGP has instructed all Police Commands and Formations to implement similar training regimens. Each officer is now required to complete a course on Policing Ethics and Professional Conduct at least once a year. This initiative is expected to promote positive behavioral changes among officers and enhance their overall effectiveness in serving the public.

Currently, over 360 officers from the Nigeria Police Safe School Protection Squad are undergoing specialized training at the Police Mobile Force Training Camp in Ende Hills, Nasarawa State. This program aims to equip officers with the necessary skills to ensure the safety and security of educational institutions across Nigeria, a commitment that reflects the urgent need for enhanced protection in the wake of rising concerns about school safety.

The Inspector-General’s emphasis on continuous learning and skill development signals a significant shift in the operational framework of the Nigeria Police Force, aiming to boost public confidence and improve service delivery.
