Nollywood actor Adedimeji Lateef has assured fans that his collaboration with Netflix remains strong and that the second part of his movie Lisabi: A Legend Is Born will premiere on the platform in January 2025.
This statement comes after widespread concern on Wednesday when reports suggested Netflix was pulling out of Nigeria. The speculation was fueled by remarks from Nollywood director Kunle Afolayan during the 2024 Zuma Film Festival. Afolayan revealed that Netflix had stopped funding directors, leaving many ongoing projects in limbo. His own project, Anikulapo: The Rise of the Spectre, was unaffected because it had already completed production for two additional seasons approved by Netflix.
In response to these claims, Netflix clarified that it was not leaving Nigeria and reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigerian stories, though it did not specify how that support would continue.
Amid the uncertainty, fans of local content voiced concerns about the future of their favorite productions, including Lisabi. Addressing these fears, Adedimeji Lateef shared a reassuring message on X (formerly Twitter):
“The internet got a not-so-good news about our principal partners, Netflix, yesterday, and many have expressed concerns about Lisabi: A Legend Is Born.
“We’re pleased to announce that our relationship with the streaming platform is intact, and the second part of our blockbuster movie Lisabi will hit Netflix in January as promised.
“Anticipate magic. Trailer and poster dropping soon.”
Lateef’s statement has brought relief to fans, reinforcing the hope that Nigerian stories will continue to shine on the global stage.
