In a significant move aimed at safeguarding the interests of Nigerian consumers, Honourable Ibrahim Ayokunle Isiaka, the representative of Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency, has taken a stand against the escalating issues surrounding electricity distribution companies (Discos) in Nigeria. During a plenary session today, Hon. Ibrahim Isiaka delivered a passionate motion highlighting the urgent need to address the activities of these companies, particularly concerning the replacement of obsolete electricity meters.
Speaking before his fellow lawmakers, Hon. Ibrahim Ayokunle Isiaka expressed grave concern over the recent actions of Discos, which he argues pose a direct threat to the economic stability and welfare of the Nigerian populace. He pointed out that consumers, who have already paid for their electricity meters, are now being asked to make additional payments for replacements under dubious pretenses. This situation, he emphasized, not only undermines consumer trust but also exacerbates the financial burdens faced by citizens already grappling with economic challenges.
Despite ongoing regulatory oversight, Hon. Ibrahim Ayokunle Isiaka lamented that DISCOS continue to operate with impunity, showing a blatant disregard for consumer rights. In light of these issues, he called on the House to take decisive action.
The motion proposed several key resolutions, including urging the Federal Ministry of Power to declare Discos as non-state actors and to implement immediate measures to curb their reckless actions. Additionally, he called for a recapitalization of at least 500 billion Naira for the Discos, allowing only those with the financial capacity to provide satisfactory services to operate.
Furthermore, Hon. Ibrahim Isiaka urged the committee on power to conduct a thorough investigation into the activities of these distribution companies, ensuring they are held accountable for their actions. He also emphasized the need for stricter regulations to promote transparency and fairness in their dealings with consumers. To empower the public, he proposed the activation of awareness campaigns to educate consumers about their rights and the proper channels for addressing grievances related to electricity services.
The motion received a warm response from fellow lawmakers, who recognized the pressing need for reform in the electricity sector. With the committee on power mandated to report back within four weeks, there is a renewed hope that meaningful changes may soon be on the horizon for Nigerian consumers.
