The Ogun State Government has strongly refuted accusations made by Hon. Ladi Adebutu, the defeated governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), labeling them as unfounded and deceptive.
During a press conference, Adebutu claimed that Governor Dapo Abiodun was accompanied by armed military personnel and police during the recent local government elections, intending to intimidate voters and incite violence.
In response, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, characterized Adebutu's statements as the desperate actions of a "drowning man" attempting to drag others down with him. Akinmade emphasized that under Governor Abiodun's leadership, Ogun State has remained free from political violence, underscoring the governor's commitment to peace.
Akinmade further clarified that after casting his vote, Governor Abiodun returned directly home and remained there until after the elections, before traveling to Ondo State where another governorship election had recently occurred.
He accused Adebutu of engaging in political thuggery, asserting that the PDP candidate had unlawfully brought in 40 policemen from MOPOL 49 in Lagos, who, alongside PDP supporters on motorcycles armed with guns and other weapons, attempted to disrupt the electoral process by snatching ballot boxes.
One notable incident involved an attack at a polling station where Hon. Muhammed Olaitan Efuwape, the Vice Chairman of Ikenne Local Government, was shot alongside another voter. The fleeing policemen reportedly sought refuge in Adebutu’s residence, from where Akinmade claims they were aided in escaping rather than being apprehended.
Akinmade urged Adebutu to cooperate with law enforcement and explain his actions regarding the illegal deployment of police personnel, rather than attempting to distance himself from the chaos that erupted during the elections.
He dismissed Adebutu’s claims that voting was obstructed in certain areas, asserting that the majority of Ogun residents actively participated in the electoral process. Akinmade criticized Adebutu's political standing, noting that his own running mate had deemed him unfit for governance.
In closing, Akinmade labeled Adebutu a "sore loser," suggesting that he has failed to accept the reality of his electoral defeat and the resulting fractured political landscape.
