Dear Governor Dapo Abiodun,
I write this open letter to express deep concern over the state of governance in Ogun State under your leadership. It is becoming increasingly evident that the direction in which you are leading the state is far from the ideals of democratic principles and good governance that we expect from our leaders.
The recent detention of Gafar Asaolu is just one example of the oppressive measures you have taken to silence opposition voices, particularly those who stand in contrast to your administration’s actions. The very foundation of democracy rests on the ability of its citizens to express their opinions freely, including dissent. By stifling opposition, you are not only undermining the rights of individuals but also diminishing the integrity of Ogun State’s democracy.
Your actions are a stark reminder of a pattern of leadership that leans heavily toward autocracy rather than democratic accountability. Silencing the opposition, especially those aligned with the camp of Ladi Adebutu, is not the solution to the challenges that Ogun State faces. Such actions reflect a growing tyranny that is a direct contradiction to the ideals of democracy.
Furthermore, your administration’s failure to prioritize the people’s welfare, alongside the reports of embezzlement and mismanagement of state funds, is a betrayal of the trust placed in you by the citizens. It is widely known that funds meant for the development of Ogun State have been misappropriated, and the lack of progress in essential sectors, such as infrastructure, healthcare, and education, further highlights this failure. The people of Ogun State have been subjected to poor leadership while the state’s resources are looted, leaving a trail of broken promises and abandoned projects.
Instead of addressing these critical issues, you have chosen to divert attention by attacking those who dare to challenge your governance. This is not only a poor reflection of leadership but a disservice to the people who look to you for progress, not repression.
Governor Abiodun, the people of Ogun State deserve better. We deserve a leader who is committed to transparency, accountability, and progress, not one who operates from a position of power designed to silence the very voices that could bring about positive change.
It is time to rethink your approach. Release Gafar Asaolu, allow for free and fair political expression, and most importantly, prioritize the people’s well-being over personal gains. The people of Ogun State will not be silenced, and we will continue to demand the leadership we deserve.
