Prospective Corps Members In Nigerian Scheme NYSC Lament Being Stranded After Rejection In Camps

The affected graduates are those mobilised for the 2024 batch B stream but later shifted to batch C. 

Thousands of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members are currently stranded after they were rejected at the orientation camps across the country. 

 

SaharaReporters gathered that the affected corps members were prevented from registering for the one-year compulsory service. 

 

The affected graduates are those mobilised for the 2024 batch B stream but later shifted to batch C. 

 

One of the affected persons who spoke to SaharaReporters on Monday said about 40 graduates were affected in the Lagos orientation camp. 

 

She said, "Please I was trying to contact you for a human right related issue. It concerns NYSC. A lot of intending corpers are stranded in their states of posting with no money to go back home and nothing from NYSC. We received our call-up letter as late as Thursday, Friday, Saturday and some even Sunday. 

 

“I got my call up letter on Thursday, got to camp on Saturday just to be sent back home after spending a lot of money on transportation. We were over 40 in the Lagos camp. And we are just waiting around to see if there's a way.”

 

In a video seen on TikTok by SaharaReporters, some of the graduates accused the management of the Kebbi Orientation Camp of maltreatment. 

 

“Ordinary registration we cannot do, they didn't give us food for one week, they just said we should go back home. I used my money to come and I will still use my money to go back,” one of the graduates lamented in the video.

 

Another graduate posted to Niger State also said, “This early morning, they woke up and told us to go back home. They said we should be going back home. Some of us do not have money. I came from Edo State and they said we should go home.”

 

All efforts made by SaharaReporters to get official reactions from the NYSC were unsuccessful. SaharaReporters learnt that the agency's former spokesman, Eddy Megwa recently retired and the acting spokesperson, Mrs Carol Lembu, has yet to send in her comments.
