Delta: ONLG Supervisory Councilor commends DELSU VC for offering free medical services to constituents

The Supervisory Councilor for Environment and Health in the Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State, Hon. Christopher Ejoh has commended the Vice-Chancellor of the State's University in Abraka, Prof. Andy Egwunyenga for partnering members of the Nigerian Medical Association in the state to offer free medical services to residents of the LGA.

Speaking on Wednesday at a One-day Stella Adadevoh Memorial Outreach in the Atuma-Iga kingdom of the LGA as part of events to mark the DTNMA AGM/Scientific Conference 2024, Ejoh hailed the Vice-Chancellor for remembering the less-privileged people in the society who could not afford the current cost of drugs and other medications.

He explained that the Oshimili North Council Chairman, Hon. Esewezie Innocent had over the years, being at the forefront to advocate for subsidized drugs for the residents to enable them tackle common diseases without having to empty their pockets.

He, therefore, expressed the commitment of the LGA to continue to give the necessary support to all partners, donors and organisations who are willing to join the council to proffer solutions to common diseases including Malaria, Typhoid, Hypertension, Dental illnesses, among others.

He said, "I want to particularly thank the Vice-Chancellor of the Delta State University, Abraka for partnering with the Nigerian Medical Association in the state for this medical outreach.

"As the Supervisory Councilor on Environment and Health in Oshimili North LGA, I must say that I am very delighted to be here to personally attend this programme. It is my hope that many residents of the LGA will benefit from this laudable gesture of the Vice-Chancellor."

While calling on the residents to give maximum cooperation to the health workers during the programme, Hon. Christopher Ejoh said no fewer than 650 residents including old and young people in the area had indicated interest to benefit from the free medical outreach.

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of the Delta State University, Abraka, Prof. Andy Egwunyenga explained that the programme was aimed at ensuring that residents of the LGA enjoy good health in order for them to continue to enjoy the dividends of democracy.

He stated that the event was also to encourage residents of the area to take their healthcare very seriously and to adhere to precautions while on medication for several ailments.

"My desire to organise this programme is because I was informed that some of the people in the LGA have various health challenges and currently can not afford treatment in hospitals for some reasons.

"So, I decided to support them in my own way to ensure that they get medication to tackle common diseases and ailments," he added.

Our Correspondent reports that during the medical outreach, free eye glasses were given to people with eye ailments; free medical consultations, and free drugs were given to the beneficiaries.

Also, several Doctors and Nurses led by the Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, Dr. Victor Osiatuma, were on ground to ensure that all the procedures concerning the outreach were observed by the beneficiaries.i
