Hon. Wahab Abiodun Egungbohun, a member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, yesterday called on the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun to take immediate action to address the cholera outbreak in the state.
The lawmaker made the call during a plenary session at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, on Tuesday.
Hon. Wahab representing Yewa North II State Constituency warned that the situation could escalate if not promptly addressed.
At the plenary conducted in Yoruba Language on Wednesday, the lawmaker said there's urgent need for the state governor to prioritize the rehabilitation of primary health centers in rural areas, which are the first point of call for residents seeking medical attention.
The lawmaker also expressed concern over the deplorable condition of these health facilities, stressing that urgent attention is required to prevent further spread of the disease (cholera).
He urged the governor to swiftly execute the 2024 budget allocation for primary health centers, ensuring that these facilities are equipped to handle the outbreak and provide quality healthcare services to rural communities in his Constituency including Ijoun, Eegua, Igbokofin, Ebute-Igbooro and Ohunbe and Ogun State in general.
While responding to the submission at the plenary, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide called on the Local Government Councils in the State to complement the State Government by embarking on the rehabiltation and upgrade of more primary health facilities at the grassroot level.
Rt. Hon. Elemide noted that there was need for the councils to contribute to the health needs of the rural people, recalling that the present administration in the State had earlier embarked on massive rehabilitation, reconstruction and upgrade of some health facilities across the State.
He noted that more needed to be done by Government to ensure that most of the Primary Health Care Centres were renovated and equipped, especially for the benefit of the rural dwellers.
