Neurosychiatric Hospital Aro Abeokuta has partnered with Coalition of Mental Health and Law Interest Groups comprising: Department of Psychiatry, College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, College of Law, University of Saskatchewan, Centre for Forensic Sciences,  University of Saskatchewan, Canadia Association of Nigerian Physicians and Dentists, Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria, Laosebikan Law Firm  and Topmarke Attorneys, present the maiden edition of Virtual Colloquium on Mental Health Law in Nigeria. 


According to a release by the convener, Professor AG Ahmed, Head of Psychiatry, College of Medicine, USask, stated that the theme of the Colloquium is "Exploring Recent Changes in the Legal Framework for Service Delivery in Mental Health in Nigeria."


He stated that the "Colloquium on Mental Health and the Law aims to delve into recent changes in the legal framework governing service delivery in health care in Nigeria, with a particular focus on mental health."


He stated further that " the Conference will bring together experts, policy makers, health care professionals,  and patients advocacy to explore the evolving legal landscape in Nigeria: through engaging discussions,  presentations, and small group discussions.  Participants will examine the implications of these changes on the provision of mental health and the conduct of research in the country. "

The conference will offer valuable insights into the current legal challenges and opportunities,  providing a platform for knowledge exchange,  collaboration and the development of innovative strategies to enhance mental health care in Nigeria.

Eminent speakers that will grace the virtual Colloquium include, Dr Tunji Alausa, the Honourable Minister of State for Health, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Abuja, Senator ( Dr) Ibrahim Oloriegbe, Former Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Y. C. Maikyau, President, Nigeria Bar Association,  Dr Mansfield Mela, Director,  Forensic Centre,  USask, Dr Law Mefor,  Forensic/ Social Psychologist,  Public Policy Analyst and Media strategist and Professor Taiwo Lateef, Psychiatrist and Past President, Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria.

There will be Break Out Session Rooms at the Colloquium which are: Mental Health Professionals Room, Lawyers and Law Enforcement Room, Policy Makers/ Health Administrator Room. 

All these Break Out Session Rooms will be facilitated by Dr Adeoye Oyewole, Professor Taiwo Obindo, President,  Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria, Dr Jibril Abdulmalik, Mr Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Assistant Inspector General of Police and Force Public Relations Officer,  Dr Foluke Oyedeji Laosebikan,  Dr Ndubuka, Former President, Canada Association of Nigeria Physicians and Dentists and Dr Aderemi Adewale, Associate Professor and Director,  National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies, Abuja.

Dr Solomon E. Arase, NPM, fdc, (IGP, Rtd)  Chairman, The Nigerian Police Service Commission, will deliver a keynote address at the Colloquium.

Dr Ibironke, Odumosu-Ayanu, Law Professor,  College of Law, USask will give the closing remarks at the Colloquium.
