The Eyewei the 5th of Azzuzuama, Southern Ijaw LGA of Bayelsa State, HRH Dr Selky Kile Torughedi has called on Nigerians to remain peaceful as the New Year 2024 unfolds. HRH Dr Selky made this known in a statement issued in Bayelsa, the Bayelsa State Capital on Sunday 31st December, 2023.
HRH Dr Selky wished Nigerians Happy New Year and urged them to remain steadfast and hopeful. He noted that though the year 2023 was challenging, 2024 should be approached with optimism and steadfastness, adding that things will get better by the Grace of God.
The Bayelsa Monarch stressed the need to be peaceful in the coming year, stressing that no community or state can develop without peace. He encouraged government at all levels to continue to strengthen peace efforts in the Niger Delta and indeed across Nigeria in order for citizens to find it easy to make something good out of their livelihoods.
The monarch concluded by with a 1939 quote from King George VI: “A new year is at hand. We cannot tell what it will bring. If it brings peace, how thankful we shall all be. If it brings us continued struggle we shall remain undaunted. I feel that we may all find a message of encouragement in the lines which, in my closing words, I would like to say to you: I said to the man who stood at the Gate of the Year, ‘Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.’ And he replied, ‘Go out into the darkness, and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be better than light, and safer than a known way. May that Almighty Hand guide and uphold us all.”
