The Eyewei the 5th of Azzuzuama, Southern Ijaw LGA of Bayelsa State, His Royal Highness Dr Selky Kile Torughedi (a.k.a General Young Shall Grow) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to support the development of the Niger Delta in order to provide functional basic social amenities for the people of the region to thrive, this according to him will be a major foundation for sustainable peace in the region. The monarch added that the region has always supported the survival of the Nigerian system by ensuring that oil production was uninterrupted hence the need for urgent support.
HRH Dr Selky made this known On Monday December 11th 2023, at the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the the "Kaiama Declaration" held in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State Capital.
The monarch said that ordinarily they had nothing much to celebrate but noted that as a bold and proud Ijaw son he would never forget the events that have impacted the Niger Delta since 1998.
He added that the Ijaw people were celebrating the decision taken and the boldness of their heros past to ensure the survival, sustainability and the peace of the entire Niger Delta region. He called attention of the Federal Government to the lives that were lost in the process of the emancipation and development of the Niger Delta Region, while expressing disappointment that despite these huge and irreplaceable sacrifices the region was still grappling with the absence of basic social amenities like electricity, motorable roads, schools etc
HRH Dr Selky used the opportunity to call on Ijaw Youths to embrace educations, which according to him is their best weapon with which to engage intellectually in order to emancipate and develop the Ijaw Nation, stressing that the use or arms no longer guarantee peace. It engenders violence.
HRD Dr Selky Kile Torughedi led the South Wing of the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND) for years before took the path of nonviolence in achieving peace in the region. Many south wing Officers where present Timi okere accompanied by Alaye Jato and Macauley Sunday from the South Wing MEND, with thousands others.
The Ijaw youths gathered in their numbers from world wide to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of the Kaiama declaration.
