Shehu Sani, a former federal lawmaker, has called for the immediate lifting of the sanctions imposed on Niger Republic by the European Union and the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS.
Recall that some military officers led by erstwhile Presidential Guard Commander, General Abdourahamane Tchiani had ousted President Mohamed Bazoum of Niger Republic back in July 2023.
And in reaction, ECOWAS and EU placed sanctions against the West African country.
However, it appears the sanctions are only inflicting more hardship and making life difficult for the poor people.
“The ECOWAS and EU sanctions imposed on Niger Republic is affecting the capacity and capabilities of the country to fight terrorism.” Sani, who served in the 8th Senate, wrote on X.
“We are witnessing escalation of terrorist attacks in Nigeria’s bordering states.
“These sanctions must be lifted in the interest of the collective security of the West African region
