The Executive Chairman, of Abeokuta South Local Government, Hon. Omolaja Ayodele Majekodunmi, has appealed to parents and every girl child ages 9 to 14 years in the Local Government to get vaccinated against the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) (Cervical Cancer).
Hon. Majekodunmi, who was ably represented by the Supervisor for Medical and Health, Comr. AbdulGafar Abdul Kareem (Alaseyori) made this appeal during the flag-off ceremony of the HPV vaccination exercise, which took place at the Baptist Girls' Grammer School, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, on Tuesday, 24th October, 2023.
The Council Chairman stated that the HPV vaccine is to protect and prevent the girl child from contacting the 2nd deadliest Cancer in the world after Breast Cancer.
"It is a disease that manifests in the female gender of childbearing age (30, 35, and above). According to the report, over 12,000 cases of Cervical Cancer are recorded in Nigeria annually, while about 8,000 of them die of it. The GARDASIL VACCINE is a vaccine introduced by the Nigerian Government to prevent Cervical Cancer, and hence the need to generate awareness of the dangers of cervical cancer.
The Medical Officer of Health (MOH) in the Local Government, Dr. Atinuke Duze, admonished parents to release their girl child for the vaccination, which she said is not harmful to their reproductive system and is free.
Others at the Flag-off ceremony include the National Orientation Agency personnel, Senior and Junior Principals of Baptist Girls' Grammar School, State Primary Health Board personnel, Medical, and Health Personnel, and Information and Education Officers in the Local Government.
