The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Association-Alliance (REEEA-A) has asked Nigeria to prioritise energy security, renewable and energy efficiency amidst global challenges.
The President of REEEA-A, Prof. Magnus Onuoha, while speaking at a one-day workshop in Abuja, said Nigeria’s renewable resources could also address the employment challenges in the country, especially for entrepreneurs.
Onuoha said globally, the Russia-Ukraine war has shown that beyond energy transition, countries like Nigeria need to look vigorously at security.
According to him, fuel subsidy removal, electricity act recently signed into law and rising cost of energy-dominant systems have shown that it is time for a very critical approach and behavioural change toward renewable energy and energy efficiency.
“Beyond installation and deployment of renewable energy and energy-efficient technologies, there are millions of ancillary jobs/efforts that accrue from there.
“There are so many activities, new dynamics, technologies, interventions, measures, policies and relationships flowing around the renewable energy and energy efficiency sector,” he said.
The Chief Executive Officer, Association of Power Generation Companies, Joy Ogaji, disclosed that more than 420,000 megawatts (MW) of power could be generated from solar energy in Nigeria.
According to her, the potential of renewable energy in Nigeria is huge.
Ogaji said: “Hydro resources are estimated at 14,750MW. Wind speeds of 2-5m/s with a potential of 150,000MW.”
