Students in Ogun State have disowned the Ogun Central Senatorial candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Mr Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, describing him as a misfit for the seat.
The students made the decision in a statement issued and jointly signed by the Chairman of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Damilola Simeon, Global President of National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS), Ogunrombi Gbemileke and Nigeria President of the Progressive Students Movement (PSM), Okerafor Bestman, NANS Southwest Coordinator, Emmanuel Olatunji and NANS, National Deputy Senate President, Segun Elvis.
They alleged that Salisu mobilised armed thugs in his convoy to attack and intimidate and coerce people to do his bids.
The students said some of the thugs started shooting sporadically at the front of the Federal College of Education, Osiele, where students had gathered to welcome Mr Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun to Odeda local on Wednesday, January 18th, stressing that
They also said that thugs It took the special force of the men of the State Security Service (SSS) to disarm these thugs who evaded arrest but one pump action was seized.
Last Wednesday during APC Presidential rally at M.K.O Abiola stadium, kuto, the students alleged that the same thugs loyal to Salisu also attacked the State Chairman of NANS and the National Deputy Senate President of NANS whose gadgets and other valuables were carted away while they were called upon to mount the podium and address on behalf of students constituency.
To them, the act of Salisu does not portray good character or prospect of a candidate seeking the people’s mandate as a senatorial candidate, calling on the people to reject Salisu.
They also pronounced Salisu persona non grata on all campuses in the State
They therefore called on the security agencies to investigate the shooting at Osiele as well as arresting the perpetrators of the dastard acts.
The statement reads: "The united front of all student bodies in Ogun state under the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS) and the Progressive Students Movement (PSM) write this press release with highest level of disappointment in the Ogun Central Senatorial candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Mr Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, who has conducted himself in a dishonourable manner before the entire people of Ogun State.
For record purpose, on Wednesday, 18th of January, 2023 at the party’s general campaign in Odeda Local Government area, Mr Shuaib Salisu mobilised armed thugs in his convoy to intimidate and coerce people to do his bids. Some of these thugs started shooting sporadically at the front of the Federal College of Education, Osiele, where students had gathered to welcome Mr Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun. It took the special force of the men of the State Security Service (SSS) to disarm these thugs who evaded arrest but one pump action was seized".
"Again, on Wednesday 25th January, 2023 at the Presidential campaign at MKO Stadium in Abeokuta, these armed thugs once again attacked the state Chairman of NANS and the National Deputy Senate President of NANS whose gadgets and other valuables were carted away while they were called upon to mount the podium and address on behalf of students constituency. The students constituency would have mobilized the resources within our reach to match them force to force but to avoid scenario that would embarrass our peace loving Governor we maintained orderliness".
"This phenomenon does not portray good character or prospect of a candidate seeking the people’s mandate as a senatorial candidate. We are concerned that should individuals like him be given mandate, our peacefully coordinated state under the leadership of Prince Dr Dapo Abiodun would be put at risk. It would be in the good interest of the state that to continue to enjoy the goodwill of Prince Dr Dapo Abiodun, a personality like Mr Shuaib Salisu be rejected with his wings cut off now as he poses a threat to the peace of the state. As concerned citizens of the state with pursuit for democratic and peace consolidation, we are demanding that the shooting at osiele be investigated and necessary arrest be made", the statement added.
According to the statement"We are aware that Mr Shuaib Salisu hosted a group of youths yesterday to create an impression that he is youth and students loving. Should we need to remind him that the Governor positioned him as his Chief of Staff for more than three years and he could not point out to any youth or students benefitting programs he has facilitated throughout this period. Now he has suddenly appeared like someone who is interested in the course of young people just to cajole and lobby the constituency for votes. What a shameful outing for him! Young people in Ogun State have the discerning knowledge to differentiate between a genuine action and self-seeking moves".
They therefore expressed their continue for support for Governor Dapo Abiodun.
"It is imperative to clarify that all Nigerian students in the Gateway state are solidly behind the second term aspiration of His Excellency Prince Dr Dapo Abiodun MFR, who has shown us competency and goodwill as the governor of the state in the last four years. But our fear is that should Mr Shuaib Salisu be allowed to go ahead to mobilise his shenanigans without caution, it would stain the good posture of his excellency".
The statement reads"We are making it an emphatic statement that Mr Shuaib Afolabi Salisu is hereby pronounced persona non grata on all our campuses in Ogun State. He has not portrayed himself in a good manner and should not be allowed anywhere near an institution of excellence which our campuses represent. Even as we agitate for this, we shall continue to give Prince Dr Dapo Abiodun MFR the deserving support to actualise his second term bid".
