A former Minister of Defense and Foreign Affairs, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro has joined prominent Nigerians to pay glowing tributes to the late former Head of Interim Government and elder statesman, Chief Ernest Adegunle Shonekan who died recently at the age of 85 years.
The former minister in a statement signed by his Special Assistant, Sulaimon Adebiyi, expressed deep grief over the demise of Shonekan, describing his transition as a huge loss to the nation, noting that the late Egba born British-trained lawyer and industrialist was a “sage, true democrat and statesman whose virtues and contributions to national development would live forever in the heart of Nigerians.
According to the front-line politician, “it is crystal clear that his wealth of expertise as a notable elder stateman and patriot who placed true service to our father’s land above personal interest, would be missed at this critical time in the nation’s history.
Aside that, the octogenarian was a compatriot who valued service to humanity and fatherland above parochial interest whereas his uncommon wisdom, presence, wise counsel, experience and his sterling qualities of honesty and transparency are all needed in trying times of our national life”
Recounting the reigns of the deceased who introduced people-centric economic policies and etched his name on the sand of time as a peacemaker who nonetheless tried his best during his few months in power.
Obanikoro submitted that the late sage was a specimen of a patriotic trailblazer whose life was a pattern of good works, worthy of emulation.
