Former France defender Jean-Pierre Adams has died aged 73 after spending 39 years in a coma.
Adams used to play for Nice and Paris Saint-Germain, had represented his country in secret matches but became horridly vegetative when knee surgery went wrong in 1982.
During the surgery there had been a problem with Adams’ supply of anaesthetic, while a cushion used to prop him up had slipped without medical staff noticing.
The Senegal born player was lacking oxygen and then suffocated before shortly suffering a cardiac arrest while undergoing the operation.
It was an unfortunate turn for the footballer as his wife, Bernadette, confirmed that he had told her, "It's all fine, I'm in great shape," on the morning of the surgery day.
However, it was one he never woke up from .
