DELTA VARIANT OF COVID 19: OGUN ASSEMBLY ADVISES RESIDENTS ON SAFETY PROTOCOLS

In view of the recent discovery of the deadly Delta variant of COVID-19 now ravaging some countries including Nigeria, the Ogun State House of Assembly has cautioned residents to be vigilant by adhering strictly to the necessary safety precautions and protocols in stemming the rapid spread of the third wave of the disease.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, issued the caution, during the plenary session at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Oluomo explained that the spike in the daily cases of victims recorded in the last two weeks, particularly in the neighbouring State, required that all residents of the State resume the use of face mask, maintain social distancing and do regular hand washing amongst others to flatten the curve of the disease in the State.

Explaining the imperative of adhering to preventive measures, especially as the celebration of Eld-Kabir approaches, Speaker Oluomo noted that it was important to further comply with all protective measures.

In another development, Oluomo has lauded the intervention of the National Assembly, Federal and State Governments for their interventions, in securing the release of an activist and an indigene of the State, Dr. Kunle Garb, who was arrested and prosecuted by Benin Republic authority for allegedly resisting Benin’s encroachment on the Nigerian land at Igbokofi village in Yewa North Local Government area of the State.

Oluomo gave the remarks in his response to the presentation of a member representing Yewa North II State Constituency, Wahab Haruna, who notified the Assembly of the recent release of the activist courtesy of the intervention of relevant stakeholders.

The Speaker, thereafter admonished the Federal Government through the concerned agencies including the Ministry of Interior and that of Foreign Affairs, to step up strategies at improving on the security of residents of border communities with a view to curbing a re-occurence of such illegal detention.
