The youth leadership of Ogun State has given a nod to a consolidative request initiated by the State Security Services to avert looming unrest over repeated loss of lives in Ogun West owing to continuous confrontations between Smugglers and men of the Nigeria Customs Services.
At a meeting of high-powered delegates held on Wednesday January 6, 2021, the Director of State Security Services explained the need for an immediate collaboration with the Youth Council and all Security Agencies in the State to harmonize efforts and present a workable approach to continue ensure the safety of lives and properties.
Recall that the press release made available on December 30, 2020, by the State Secretary of the Youth Council, Com. Akolawole Shoremi, the youth leadership warned concerned authorities on treating the continuous loss of lives with kid gloves. According to the press statement, the rate of killings in Ogun West is out rightly condemnable, pathetic and no longer bearable to the youths of Ogun State. “Yesterday’s walk against the incessant killings of our peers and the people of border towns and communities is a warning to those in positions of authority to voluntarily find an end to this deadly act or become forced to take action,” Shoremi said.
However, responding to the youths’ lamentations on the unwarranted killings, at the January 6 meeting, the Ogun State Comptroller for Nigeria Customs Service, PC Kolo appreciated the youth leadership for managing the agitations obviously capable of threatening the peace of the State.
While sympathizing with families of those lost to the unfortunate incidents, Kolo regretted the death counts affirming that the lives of the people of Ogun State remain of utmost importance to Customs’ Officers. “Let me reiterate that, most times, the narrative is not often in line with the actual details of event as no Officer of the Nigeria Customs Service will voluntarily aim at an innocent person. The situation at hand is truly worrisome and we are willing to synergize with all concerned stakeholders, particularly the youths to bring an end to similar occurrence. I have also launched investigations into these killings and you have my assurance towards fishing out any bad egg,” he said.
The Youth Leader of Ogun State, Com. Abdul-Jabar Ayelaagbe, commended the State Security Services for the efforts made towards facilitating the meeting as he also assured the Comptroller of Customs Service for necessary support from the youths toward the avoidance of further loss of life.
The delegations also agreed on conveying a Stakeholders’ Forum, as soon as possible, to further address other areas of concern on the challenges of the affected communities.
