Group Berates FG For Shelving Re-opening Of Schools

The Ijebu Youths Association has dragged the federal government to the mud for rescinding its earlier decision to allow schools reopen saying that the decision could not have been said to have been taken in the interest of many Nigerians youths who have been wasting away at home for over three months due to Covid-19.

The National President of the youth association, Comr Fayomi Wasiu Okikiola stated this while speaking with our Correspondent.

Comr Fayomi Wasiu explained that it was disheartening to hear the Federal government cancelling its earlier directive on resumption of schools as the students were already tired of staying at homes and were quite eager to return to classrooms for their academic pursuits.

Fayomi said " Yes, we are in a hard time due to the Covid-19 pandemic which has taken the whole world by storm and this necesitated the shutting down of the schools since March but three months after, it is necessary to begin to see how we can reopen the schools for students to continue their education even if it will be in batches

"This pandemic, according to report has come here to stay and that the only way out of this is when a vaccine is found. Does that mean the students would be kept at home till next year or when. The federal government has gotten it all wrong as far as this decision is concerned

"For instance, the schools should have been opened so that those in SS3 could write their WAEC as well as those in JSS3, then modalities for resumption of other classes would have been worked out. The government will only ensure that all the health guidelines relating to managing Covid-19 are put in place and complied with".

Fayomi disclosed further "that there is no doubt urgent need for the Federal government to lift the embargo on reopening of schools so that Nigerian students could go back to schools and complete their studies, anything contrary to this is counterproductive and inimical to the progress of Nigerian youths and would be vehemently resisted".
