Abeokuta- Barely Forty-Five days after the Ogun State Government announced the donations of new 100 Patrol vehicles and 200 motorcycles with adequate security equipment installed for the use of the State Police Command, the vehicles and motorcycles have remained ‘abandoned’ for use.
Penpushing reports that, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, was in the State on September 6, purposely for receipt of the vehicles and for onward transmission to the Police Command in the State.
The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun handed over the donation to the Inspector General of Police at a ceremony held at the Arcade Ground of the Governor’s office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, while thereafter, the duo test driven one of the patrol vans.
Penpushing further reports that, the Governor in his speech said the vehicles and motorcycles were to assist the Nigeria Police Force effectively combat crime, in Ogun State and environs, adding that his administration was determined to ensure peace within the state.
The Governor also boasted that his government would leave no stone unturned to achieve this, saying he was aware that investment in the state would grow only under a peaceful atmosphere and therefore security is paramount.
The Inspector General of Police on his own, having earlier addressed officers at the State Police Command headquarters, Abeokuta, said measures had been put in place to equip the police effectively fight crime, without risking their lives.
Penpushing also reports that, the police boss added that the Federal Government would provide state of the art equipment to assist them effectively combat crime, and assured that no officer of the force would die again while fighting crime.
The number one policeman in the country also disclosed that the Federal Government has acquired patrol vehicles fitted with security cameras that would enable patrol team identify and diagnose crime scenes even from a faraway distance. He promised officers of an improved and redefined welfare package in the course of serving their fatherland.
Penpushing exclusive investigation, on the donated vehicles to the Ogun State Command showed that, the vehicles and motorcycle were kept under the sun and rain, since it was donated and handed over, almost two months ago.
The ‘abandoned’ vehicles according to further findings may soon start experiencing deteriorated condition and theft of some of its components, having being parked in the arcade which is an open space, known to be a ‘ghost’ town after the close of work by the civil servants in the secretariat.
Penpushing made several efforts to find out reasons for the abandonment of the vehicles and motorcycles proved but was abortive, as there were no officials both from the Government and Police to give reasons for the delay in making use of the donations for the purpose meant for.
