The factional speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Kawuwa Shehu Damina, and his deputy, Tukur Ibrahim, have been restrained by a court in Bauchi from parading themselves as the state Assembly’s speaker and deputy speaker respectively.
Following an application filed by Abubakar Suleiman and 12 other lawmakers, the presiding judge, Justice A.M Karin Madaki, granted the order of interim injunction on Friday, June 21, Daily Trust reports.
Legit.ng gathers that the application was filed against Bauchi State House of Assembly, the state’s attorney general, Kawuwa Shehu Damina, Tukur Ibrahim, and 16 others as defendants, on June 21.
In his ruling, the judge stated: “Having listened to the learned counsel to the plaintiffs/applicants, Ben Ogbuchi, ESQ, Mukhtar A. Usman ESQ, O.P Egbe-Okpenge, ESQ, move the court in terms of their motion ex-parte dated and filed on 21/06/2019.
“I hereby ordered that an order of interim injunction be and is hereby made, restraining the 3rd and 4th respondents/defendants from parading themselves out and/or parading themselves, purporting to act in whatever manner as the speaker and deputy speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly respectively, pending the determination of the motion on notice.”
The judge subsequently adjourned the case to July 2 for motion on notice.
Recall that Legit.ng previously reported that Abubakar Suleiman, the lawmaker representing Ningi central constituency at the Bauchi State House of Assembly, was elected by 11 out of 31 members as the speaker of the 9th assembly.
Suleiman was elected by members loyal to Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed.
However, the election was rejected by lawmakers loyal to former governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar who were not at the Assembly complex during the election and inauguration.
They rejected the emergence of the new speaker when they arrived and decided to hold a parallel election in front of the Assembly complex. Consequently, they elected Kawuwa Damina as the speaker of the House.
