Suspected cultists have killed a 20-year-old man, identified simply as Kehinde, during a carnival at Mowe in Ofada Mokolokin Local Council Development Area of Ogun State.
Kehinde and his twin brother were among the guests at the carnival. The incident occurred on Christmas Eve at 09 Junction.
The party was going on smoothly when someone from nowhere attacked one of the suspected Eiye cult members from Ibafo and ran away.
Immediately the Eiye cult members saw that one of their colleagues had been attacked, they went in search of the attacker.
A witness, who did not want his name in print, said when the Eiye cult members were returning from where they went in search of the attacker that they pounced on Kehinde.
He said: “When they were returning, they saw Kehinde and his friends where they were sitting and the injured Eiye member pointed at Kehinde that he was the one who attacked him.
“The cult members asked Kehinde why he attacked their member. He explained to them that he didn’t know anything about the attack. But one of the cultists came from behind and struck him with an axe on the neck.
“Initially, he didn’t know he was cut. While trying to escape from the mob, blood started gushing out from his neck. He fell inside the gutter. Thereafter, the assailants escaped from the scene.”
A resident, Mr. Adebayo Kunle, said immediately the deceased fell inside the gutter, his twin brother who was afar watching what the cult members where doing to him, rushed to assist him.
“There was nothing his twin brother could do; he had already died. Even the food he ate before they attacked him was coming out from his neck; it was a gory sight.
“The worst part of it was that even after the cult group had left, the disc jockey (DJ) they contracted to play at the carnival was still playing music.
“It was a terrible experience. The deceased was just a victim of circumstance. He and his twin brother just came to the carnival like any other person. Their mother is very popular in the community.”
Another resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said nobody could move close to the body of the deceased. He said it was the policemen from Mowe Division who evacuated his remains to a public mortuary.
He said: “The Divisional Police Officer of Mowe Division, I learnt, warned the organisers of the carnival to stop it. But they went ahead without applying for police protection.
“After the incident, the organisers told the police that the deceased was chased to the venue of the carnival and that he was not killed within the venue of the carnival. But it was a lie. The deceased died right at the centre of the carnival.”
When our correspondent visited Kehinde’s mother’s house at Thuraya area, she was said not to be at home.
When contacted to confirm the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, promised to get back to our correspondent.
