THE activities of cult members reached its crescendo late on Friday, as they were alleged to have killed an Army personnel.
The killing was said to have triggered crisis at the North Bank area of the town, leading to some buildings being vandalised and causing a gridlock along the Makurdi-Lafia highway.
Shops and markets in the area were under lock and key, as residents had to stay indoors for fear of being caught in the mayhem.
When contacted, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer (DPPRO), ASP Matthew Oku, who confirmed the incident, however noted that no life was lost in the attack.
He stated that at about 11:50 pm, police got a distress call that a group of persons were converging on Mainland Hotel along NASME road.
“Police immediately went to the scene and, on getting there, met a group of people in military uniform. We noticed the soldiers had a problem with inhabitants of the area. The soldiers alleged that the civilians injured one of their personnel.
“There was trouble in the area. People were attacked and injured, including policemen who were there. No life was lost. Police are still investigating the matter to ascertain what really happened.”
The police spokesman however said that normalcy had returned as the Commissioner of Police, CP Dibal Yakadi and other senior government officials visited the scene.
The police spokesman, who disclosed that no arrests had been made at the time of filing this report, urged members of the public not to take the law into their own hands but to maintain peace, as the police would do everything possible to bring perpetrators of the dastardly acts to book.
