An unidentified woman is said to have slumped and died while attempting to throw away her newly born set of twins into a pit latrine at Ochonyi village, near Abaji town on the FCT/Kogi State border.
A resident of the community, who preferred anonymity, said the incident happened around 10:23 p.m. when the woman, who was carrying a nine month pregnancy, sneaked out to deliver at the back of the house where she gave birth to a set of twins.
He said another woman in the compound, who went out to ease herself, saw the deceased with the babies wrapped in a piece of cloth and advancing towards latrine.
The witness added that the deceased, who stayed in a rented room in the compound, was abandoned by her husband, who went to Ibadan, Oyo State over seven months ago without contacting her.
According to him, after delivering the set of twins, the deceased attempted to get rid of them and run away out of frustration but in the process, she slumped and died.
The witness added that the village head of the community went to report the incident at a police outpost before she was buried.
“The entire residents of village were shocked that the woman delivered a set of twins on her own without anybody knowing, not until a woman in the compound, who went to ease herself saw her entering the latrine with the babies and raised alarm,” he said.
He disclosed that the babies, a boy and a girl, have been taken to a motherless home at Lokoja in Kogi State.
When City News visited Chikara Police Station, the Divisional Police Officer was not on seat but a police officer confirmed the incident.
The officer said efforts were on to trace her husband.
